Martha Brown to Merge with Eastside Church

By Ken Rose
In the coming weeks, Eastside Church will relocate from the Oakhurst neighborhood to East Atlanta Village. They will be merging their congregation with the Martha Brown United Methodist Church. Eastside will retain their pastoral leadership as well as their fresh, creative and inclusive approach. The new combined Congregation will have over 300 members supporting a robust children’s ministry. Renovations to the space are currently underway.
The merger will strengthen the ministry at Martha Brown and provide a permanent home for Eastside Church. Both congregations will become one and the church will continue to serve as East Atlanta’s community church.
Eastside formed in 2011 in Oakhurst Village. Their creative, modern and inclusive congregation has grown rapidly and continues to grow today. As a church with a heart for social justice, they look forward to the many new ministry opportunities this move affords. Combining the two congregations will allow Martha Brown, the longest surviving community institution in East Atlanta, to continue its mission of feeding the community through service. Eastside Church is a perfect name for the new congregation and honors Martha Brown’s roots as the East Atlanta Methodist Church and reflects the complexion of Eastside’s membership.
“We’re thrilled to be joining Martha Brown and the East Atlanta neighborhood,” said the Rev. Timothy Lloyd, founding pastor of Eastside Church. “We are eager to open up the doors of new Eastside Church to the wonderful people of East Atlanta in the weeks to come.”
Eastside plans to hold the first public worship service of the newly merged congregation on Easter Sunday, April 20 at 9:30 and 11a.m. To learn more visit their website http://eastsideatl.org/eastside-move/ or contact Rev. Timothy Lloyd, tim@eastsideatl.org.
