Since the 1930s, Park Avenue Baptist Church has had a significant presence in Grant Park. Last May, Tony Lankford, who has served as the pastor for the last 11 years, announced he had accepted a call to pastor First Baptist Church of St. Simons Island. Instead of calling a new senior pastor, the church, deacons, and current ministry staff began a discernment process, ultimately proposing and adopting a new, non-hierarchical leadership model. In this pastoral team, five part-time pastors and one full-time pastor cover all ministry responsibilities and share duties for pastoral care and preaching. The team consists of Lanta Carroll, pastor of Families and Congregational Care; Brandon Maxwell, pastor of Worship and Spiritual Formation; Trey Lyon, pastor of Communication and Engagement; Henra Chennault, pastor of Young Adults and Community Relations; Rebecca Weems, pastor of Educational Advocacy and Administration; and Jennifer Lyon, pastor of Congregational Leadership.
Our pastoral team sees Park Avenue as a bold, inclusive, creative community where we seek to journey together in faith. We are grateful for the Grant Park community, and we consider it a privilege to serve this diverse, gifted, unique neighborhood.
