East Atlantan Runs for Board of Education

By Carlen Hultgren
Longtime East Atlanta Village (EAV) resident Lewis Cartee has announced his candidacy for the Atlanta Board of Education (ABOE) slot in District 3. A 1992 graduate of The University of Georgia, Lewis moved to East Atlanta in the spring of 2006 with his wife Debbie, where the two of them raise their daughter. Involved in the community since moving to Atlanta, he has continually taken on leadership roles in the neighborhood and school related organizations. Wanting to build a caring and successful community for all, Lewis realized that all roads lead back to education and our schools, and therefore has decided to run for the ABOE.
Over the past 11 years, Lewis has served in multiple community leadership roles in East Atlanta including his current second term as president of the East Atlanta Community Association (EACA). He has held, and continues to hold, other positions of leadership and chairs several committees, most often associated with education and school issues. EACA was named the community association of the year by DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson during his tenure.
Cartee’s true passion lies with the role schools play in creating a better future for our children as well as the greater community. He served, as the Local School Council Chair at Burgess-Peterson Academy Elementary School (BPA) and is now the current Governance Team (GO Team) Chair. He has had positions with Southeast Atlanta Communities for Schools and the Jackson Cluster Advisory Team and he is the Education Chair for the NPU-W. In 2017, Lewis was honored to receive the 2017 Atlanta Parents for Atlanta Public Schools Education Advocacy Award for District 3.
Cartee has said, “While receiving recognition for your work is humbling and appreciated, my focus is always on the education of all of our children. We cannot forge plans that isolate parts of the city or individual groups of students. We need to create greater collaboration between the City of Atlanta and APS, focusing on quality of life and creating safe and productive learning environments.”
The East Atlanta community, its families, and specifically its children, should consider themselves lucky to have an advocate of such commitment and energy in the neighborhood.
The election will be held on November 7 and deadline for registering to vote in this (general) election is October 10. It is easy to do online at http://registertovote.sos.ga.gov.
