The annual Jump Rope for Heart event took place at Parkside Elementary School on March 4. This event is a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. It is also to help children learn fun activities that can improve heart health. Before the event, the children were given donation sheets to solicit funds on behalf of the Heart Association.
Starting in midwinter, in the late afternoons and on weekends, student Cherokee Connell went to the homes of her neighbors in the heart of Ormewood Park to ask them to contribute to Jump Rope for Heart. She was closely followed by either her mother Mary “Sassy” Connell or her grandmother Lee Woolard. Her older brother Tommy Connell also stepped in to help her and managed to collect another $100.
For years the Connell family of Delaware Avenue has taught their children the importance of contributing to society by donating to charity. Cherokee managed to fill up nine of her sheets with contributions from 147 different people in the area. On the day of the event, the family helped Cherokee gather all the checks and money orders to turn in, which totaled $1,317.09. Cherokee collected more than any other student. Altogether, the school collected just over $3,000.
