Calendar July – August 2019

Editor’s note: Calendar items for upcoming months should be sent to calendar@theporchpress.com with “info4calendar” in the subject line. The next deadline for the calendar is July 25, 2019. Calendar events take place in southeast Atlanta, the area south of I-20 to Moreland Drive, and includes Grant Park, Ormewood Park, and East Atlanta.

Art Shows at the East Atlanta Library. 400 Flat Shoals Avenue. Meeting room. Open during regular library hours. Ask at the circulation desk if the room is locked and unoccupied. Shows typically change every two months. Check the library lobby area on the bulletin board and inside the library for additional information.

Family Zoo Yoga. Families with children ages 4 and up are invited to practice yoga in the Zoo before Zoo Atlanta opens. Register on zooatlanta.org.

July 27-28                Wild World Weekend. Two-day cultural heritage festival featuring live entertainment, demonstrations, crafts, and more. Highlights include the Lion Dancers of the Chien Hong School of Kung Fu; an interactive Flamenco presentation with Calo Gitano Atlanta; the music-makers and storyweavers of Kuumba Storytellers; and much more. Free with general admission or Zoo Atlanta Membership.

July 27                      Keeper for a Day: Show Birds and Animal Ambassadors. Spend the morning with the Zoo’s education animal ambassadors, and venture behind the scenes to the World of Wild Theater to help with the afternoon show. Participants must be at least 14 years old.  August 8                  Tinkergarten, East Atlanta Library, 10:30 a.m.Tinkergarten is a local nature-based educational program that aims to get young children and their families outside to learn and play together. We sing, read a book that connects to the theme of the class, and offer an engaging, expert-designed activity that ties everything together. Ages 8 and under.

August 10                Keeper for a Day: Birds and Reptiles, Zoo Atlanta. What does it take to be an animal care professional? Help Zoo animal experts with feeding and daily husbandry. Spend the morning with the Zoo’s feathered flyers; then travel across the Zoo to work with Aldabra giant tortoises and more. Participants must be 14 years old or older. Learn more on zooatlanta.org.

August 10                Family Zoo Yoga, Zoo Atlanta. Families with children ages 4 and up are invited to practice yoga in the Zoo before Zoo Atlanta opens. Join a certified yoga instructor to learn poses inspired by the animals of the African Savanna. After the class, learn fun facts about the animals and their connections to humans. August 12                World Elephant Day, Zoo Atlanta.African elephants are some of the planet’s most majestic and recognizable animals, but they face serious threats. Find out what you can do to help and learn more about elephant conservation programs and partnerships at Zoo Atlanta.

August 14                Golden Frog Day, Zoo Atlanta.Join a global day of awareness for one of the planet’s rarest and most beautiful amphibian species. Visit the Panamanian golden frogs at Zoo Atlanta and learn more about the Zoo’s work to help save this species.
