No matter what, you’ve got to strut! The East Atlanta Strut celebrates its sweet 16th birthday with a party for all ages on Saturday, September 21 from 10:00am until 9:00pm in the hopping East Atlanta Village, centered at Flat Shoals and Glenwood Avenues.
Atlanta’s funkiest funfest has something for everyone, with an artists market, free kids area, live music, a wide variety of food and drink, and the incomparable Strut Parade.
Kids can strut the plank in the pirate-themed children’s area, which also offers the chance to toss a ring around a captain’s hook, toss a cannonball, or dig for buried treasure. Kids can hunt for pieces of eight in the scavenger hunt or make a pirate hat, sword, or parrot suitable for any gentleman (or gentlewoman) of fortune. They can even build a seagoing vessel and captain her in a race! A bit of grog will be available for parents watching the wee lads and lasses. Landlubbers from the local schools are sponsoring the game booths.
Shoppers can stroll the artists market in search of unique crafts, clothing, and art. The artist’s market will feature more than 100 local artists with handmade goods, plus about 30 community booths that add to the festival atmosphere by bringing together local businesses and festival-goers through games and attractions. If you are interested in being part of the community area, please complete the online application at http://eastatlantastrut.com/booths/community-area/.
Music lovers can shuffle to the beat of great local bands at three stages throughout the festival grounds. Food and beer lovers can sashay among a wide variety of food booths sponsored by local restaurants and area vendors. Keep an eye on the Strut website and the Strut’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/EAVStrut/info for the music and food lineup.
At 2:00pm, the crowd will stroll over to Glenwood Avenue for the Strut Parade, which starts at Glenwood and Patterson Avenues and features bands, floats, bikes, and the beautiful Queen of the Strut. If watching the parade isn’t enough, sign up to march. It’s a fun way to promote your group or business, to mark an event, or just to celebrate life! Join the parade at http://eastatlantastrut.com/entertainment/parade/.
The Strut is run completely by volunteers and raises money for neighborhood nonprofit organizations. Volunteering is a great way to have fun with friends, meet your neighbors, and give back to the community. Volunteers receive two drink tickets and a fantastic staff T-shirt. There are volunteer opportunities at the beer stations, helping food vendors, in the artists market, at the carnival, and helping with festival setup, the parade, and the kids area. Sign up at http://eastatlantastrut.com/volunteers/.
