Every fall, neighbors gather under the oaks at Historic Oakland Cemetery for one of Atlanta’s most unique traditions. This year’s Sunday in the Park featuring Tunes from the Tombs happens on Sunday, September 28, from 12:00pm to 7:30pm, and it promises a little something for everyone—music, history, food, costumes, and plenty of family fun.

While some may find a cemetery to be an odd venue for a celebration, Sunday in the Park is a local tradition with deep roots. Before cities built public parks, cemeteries were often the green spaces where people came to picnic and stroll, and Oakland Cemetery was no exception. Today, events like Sunday in the Park keep that Victorian tradition of communing among the dead alive, reminding us that Oakland is a place that celebrates life and community.

Sunday in the Park is about honoring the past while celebrating the present – it’s Atlanta history you can dance to! At the heart of Sunday in the Park is the music from Tunes from the Tombs. This year’s lineup is as eclectic as Atlanta itself:

  • BB Palmer with Electric Blue Yonder – Spacey surf-folk meets cosmic country
  • Boom! Trio with Lavahi – Jazzy, soulful, and deeply improvisational
  • Arkose – Acid-jazz duo influenced by hip-hop, house and R&B with infectious energy
  • Billy Allen + The Pollies – A fusion of gospel, funk, and rock to close the night

Sunday in the Park isn’t just about the music; there’s truly something for everyone. Families can enjoy storytelling, crafts, and living history performances. History buffs can join guided tours of Oakland’s historic grounds to hear stories of our 70,000 residents. Shoppers can browse the artist market and the Oakland Store pop-up. And for those who just want to eat, imbibe, and enjoy the vibe, there will be plenty of food trucks, craft beer, and cocktails. And don’t forget the Victorian costume contest—always a crowd favorite! Dust off your top hats and parasols if you’d like to join in the fun.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids ages 6 to 17, and free for children 5 and under. VIP packages are also available with reserved seating at the stage, Bell Tower access, and some extra perks. Parking is limited, so neighbors are encouraged to walk, bike, or take MARTA to King Memorial Station. Bike valet will also be available.

Beyond being a wonderful day out, the festival supports the work of the Historic Oakland Foundation, and the proceeds from your ticket help care for one of Atlanta’s most treasured landmarks.

So, grab a blanket, gather your family, and head to Oakland on September 28. You’ll hear great music, enjoy good food, and maybe even learn a little history along the way—all while celebrating life in one of Atlanta’s oldest resting places.
