After three consecutive events along Georgia Avenue/Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard this past fall, “Atlanta Streets Alive” (ASA) once again returns to Grant Park on Sunday, May 18.
Sponsored by ATLDOT and PropelATL, the initiative takes place along a given Atlanta street, but with a twist: all car traffic is blocked off so that pedestrians, bikes, rollerblades, scooters, or any other non-car traffic can roam freely and see things from a different perspective.
From Grant Park itself (Georgia and Cherokee Avenues) all the way to Gordon-White Park in the West End (or vice versa, depending on your starting point), May’s ASA will last from 2:00pm to 6:00pm and as usual feature pop-up booths from various city agencies, nonprofit groups, and businesses, as well as special offerings from the brick-and-mortar shops along the way (particularly on the Summerhill Strip). The total distance is approximately 3.5 miles.
According to atlantastreetsalive.org (where you can also find plenty of additional information), “It’s free to the public; the event turns the street into a park space that connects our city! Atlanta Streets Alive is part of an international open streets movement happening in many cities throughout the U.S., Canada, and around the world.”
Don’t forget to reroute any trips by car to avoid Georgia Avenue and Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard. between 12:00pm and 7:00pm on May 18, the full extent of the street closure.
June’s ASA event will return to Peachtree Street on the afternoon of Sunday, June 22.
