Got Glass?

By Grant Wallace

Recycling in our city presents its challenges. Depending on where you live, there are different rules to follow to ensure your recyclables are actually recycled. For example, DeKalb doesn’t allow glass in their recycling bins, while downtown Decatur offers a separate bin specifically for glass.

Grant Wallace of Grant Park is working to follow Decatur’s lead and make glass recycling more accessible throughout Atlanta. His business, Peace of Mind Glass Recycling, recently surpassed 10,000 pounds of glass recycled, a milestone reached just a year and a half after starting the business. This was also when his son, Gus was born. It’s a small initiative that he hopes will make a big difference for Gus and his generation in the future.

What began as a small side hustle, is at its core, a father’s effort to contribute something meaningful to his community, both now and for the future. Gus may not yet understand the concept of recycling, but Grant is clear on one thing: it’s all for him. “Climate change may not be hitting us hard right now, but Gus’s generation will face the worst of it,” Grant says. “Glass is infinitely recyclable, either we turn it into a million new bottles, or it sits in a landfill for a million years. The choice is clear.”

Peace of Mind Glass Recycling was created to ensure that glass is properly recycled, something that can’t always be guaranteed by Atlanta’s city services. With Peace of Mind, you know your glass bottles and jars are sent to a reliable facility in College Park, where they’re turned back into new glass products. Atlanta is fortunate to have a company like Strategic Materials (SMI). There are only a few dozen of these glass recycling plants in the U.S., and one of them happens to be in Georgia. Grant’s service covers Grant Park, SAND, East Atlanta, and other nearby neighborhoods, offering convenient monthly pickups for just $25. No need to sort or prepare your glass, just toss it in the bin, and Grant will handle the rest.

As a thank you to the community and readers of The Porch Press, Grant is offering 20% off for anyone using the code “PorchPress” at checkout. It’s his way of saying thanks for helping keep our planet and city a little greener.

So, if you’re tired of wondering whether your glass is actually getting recycled, give Peace of Mind Glass Recycling a try. For Grant and Gus, it’s more than a business, it’s about building a better future, one bottle at a time.
