Learn the Basics of Self-Defense

By Michelle Rice
The world can be a scary place, but knowing the basics of self-defense is a way to increase confidence when it comes to personal safety. That’s why the East Atlanta Community Association (EACA) has partnered with Tree of Life Dojo to offer a 90-minute basics of self-defense class at Brownwood Park on Sunday, June 1 at 2:00pm.

Although violent crime has been going down in East Atlanta and surrounding neighborhoods, an EACA survey indicated its members are concerned about safety. This class is meant to address that and will provide tips on projecting an “I am not a victim” attitude and also demonstrate some physical moves to back up that attitude.

The instructors are professionals from Tree of Life Dojo in Grant Park. At Tree of Life, adults and kids in Atlanta learn martial arts, self-defense, and fitness in a caring, supportive community.  The nonprofit organization has been operating since 1981.

The June 1 class is open to all genders of adults 18 and older. The cost is $10 for EACA members or $30 for non-members. Non-members who take the class and live inside EACA boundaries can become EACA members with their class fee. Walk-up students will be accepted, but please register at https://givebutter.com/EACAselfdefense by May 25 to ensure you get a spot. Details about where to meet in the park will be provided after you sign up, as well as information about a bad-weather backup location.
