In summer 2014, the city’s oldest cultural destination will present Atlanta with its newest cultural opportunity. In June, Zoo Atlanta will host Art Gone Wild, a showcase of the animals, botanicals, and scenery of the Zoo through the eyes and talents of local artists.
The week-long event will highlight Plein Air, or painting outdoors. Participating artists will be selected by a committee of Zoo Atlanta Board of Directors members, Zoo staff, and representatives of the Atlanta art community. Invited artists will spend the week capturing aspects of Zoo wildlife and horticulture, and the event will conclude with a reception and silent auction of the featured artists’ inspirations found on Zoo grounds. As an added bonus, Zoo visitors will have a chance to watch the artworks develop as the artists work. Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit Zoo Atlanta’s award-winning conservation and education programs.
“We expect our first Art Gone Wild to be an exciting event for Zoo Atlanta and for the community. The Zoo is an urban oasis and a constant source of inspiration,” said Raymond B. King, President and CEO. “Atlanta has a very strong artists’ community, and we look forward to showcasing some of that fantastic talent using the Zoo’s amazing natural resources. This will be a unique new cultural project that will benefit invited artists as well as our members and guests, who will be able to watch the artists at work when they visit the Zoo.”
