Citizens Market Makes its Southeastern Premiere at Horizon Theatre

Kicking off Horizon’s New American Dreams Series is a powerful comedy-drama following a hopeful group of immigrants as they form an unlikely family, working to master the ups and downs of language, love, and staying afloat in their city. Citizens Market makes its Southeastern premiere at Horizon Theatre Company with an all-star cast and creative team, with performances beginning May 18. A good small supermarket has everything its neighborhood needs, including a charming cast of characters behind the counter. Citizens Market follows a hopeful group of immigrants as they form an unlikely family, working to master the ups and downs of language, love, and staying afloat in their new world. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette describes the play as “Moving, funny and uplifting. [This story] offers a peek on the other side of the counter, into the break room and upstairs manager’s office, where the American Dream is tantalizingly within reach one moment, and elusive the next.” Full of laughter and life, this comedy-drama celebrates an ever-shifting and eclectic America. Running May 18 – June 24 at Horizon Theatre Company.

Store manager Jesus (El Salvador), timid newcomer Akosua (Ghana), best employee Ciata (Sierra Leone), and homeless older couple Bogdan and Morphina (Romania) discover new possibilities and restock their dreams amidst the aisles of cat food and canned goods.  Horizon’s Co-Artistic Director, Jeff Adler, is at the helm of this production as director, and features Atlanta favorites including Carolyn Cook, Cynthia Barker, Allan Edwards, and Jasmine Thomas. Cristian Gonzalez joins us from Los Angeles where he actively works in television and film.

Citizens Market will run May 18 – June 24. Performances are Wednesday through Friday at 8:00pm, Saturday at 3:00pm and 8:30pm, and Sunday at 5:00pm. There will be no matinee performance on Saturday, May 19 or June 3. Tickets are $25-$45 and prices increase as performances sell out, so get your tickets early.  Seating is general admission, but patrons can upgrade to the VIP experience for an additional $15, which includes reserved seating and a complimentary beverage. Tickets and information are available at www.horizontheatre.com or 404-584-7450.
