A good small supermarket has everything its neighborhood needs, including a charming cast of characters behind the counter. Citizens Market follows a hopeful group of immigrants as they form an unlikely family, working to master the ups and downs of language, love, and staying afloat in their new world. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette describes the play as “Moving, funny and uplifting. [This story] offers a peek on the other side of the counter, into the break room and upstairs manager’s office, where the American Dream is tantalizingly within reach one moment, and elusive the next.” Full of laughter and life, this comedy-drama celebrates an ever-shifting and eclectic America. Running May 18 – June 24 at Horizon Theatre Company.

Store manager Jesus (El Salvador), timid newcomer Akosua (Ghana), best employee Ciata (Sierra Leone), and homeless older couple Bogdan and Morphina (Romania) discover new possibilities and restock their dreams amidst the aisles of cat food and canned goods.  Horizon’s Co-Artistic Director, Jeff Adler, is at the helm of this production as director, and features Atlanta favorites including Carolyn Cook, Cynthia Barker, Allan Edwards, and Jasmine Thomas.
