Book Signing of a Work about Grant Park at Atlanta Preservation Center

By Carolyn Stine McLaughlin
The Atlanta Preservation Center (APC) invites the community to a celebration of neighbors Jennifer and Phil Cuthbertson’s Images of America: Historic Grant Park and National Preservation Month. The celebration will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the L.P. Grant Mansion, 327 St. Paul Avenue SE, Atlanta, Georgia 30312 next to St. Paul United Methodist Church, two blocks west of the park. The afternoon will include a book signing by the authors, refreshments, entertainment, and tours of the L.P. Grant Mansion.
Built in 1856 by Lemuel P. Grant, the home was the center of the 600+ acre parcel that is now a wonderful park and neighborhood. Since purchasing the property in 2001, the APC has engaged in major restoration of the property including the recently completed reconstruction of the front porch.
The Cuthbertsons’ book, published by Arcadia Publishing, tells the story of one of Atlanta’s great neighborhoods with text and photographs. This is a first-time assemblage of a unique collection of photos, post cards, maps, and images of Grant Park. Phil and Jennifer have pledged the proceeds of the book to the APC for restoration of the Mansion.
The event will also serve as a celebration of National Preservation Month, Celebrating America’s Treasures. This national recognition of the importance of preservation began in 1971 as Preservation Week and has been a month-long celebration since 2005. Grant Park has a local designation as a Historic District and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It undoubtedly is one of America’s treasures.
