Burgess-Peterson Academy (BPA), located at Clifton Avenue and Glenwood Avenue recently began another school year serving East Atlanta families. It is an Atlanta public school and part of the Maynard Jackson High School cluster. Currently, it serves 380 students and can hold around 170 more. It offers instruction for children from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. BPA is a candidate to become an International Baccalaureate (IB) School.
The IB Organization is a respected nonprofit foundation that works with, and has certified more than 4,500 schools around the world. IB programs aim to do more than other curricula by developing inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who are motivated to succeed.
Already, Burgess-Peterson is scoring eight points out of 10 in reporting by greatschools.org, ranking with some of the top schools in Atlanta, The school has outscored both the district and the state on the Georgia public schools report card.
The school continues to become increasingly diverse with a substantial African American and growing Caucasian enrollment. The school offers lower than average class sizes from K through 5. The school has become noted for its organic garden and chickens tended by the students. BPA students enjoy art, music, and physical education classes weekly, and recess every day. Grades 2 through 5 have weekly Spanish classes.
Recently, BPA and its PTA participated in the EAV Strut, and in September they presented their RunEAV 5K race. Principal David White, who just started his second year at the school, invites prospective parents and community volunteers to sign up for a personal tour of Burgess-Peterson by emailing tour@burgesspeterson.com or by calling the school at 404-802-3400.
