In December, the Georgia Department of Education approved a nearly $200,000 facilities grant to the Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School (ANCS). A portion of these funds will be used to cover mortgage payments for the middle school building, while the bulk of the grant award will go towards aesthetic and safety improvements at each campus. These projects will be completed between January and June 2016.
Additionally, the middle school building was given the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR certification for 2015. This signifies that this building performs in the top 25% of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.
The middle school campus saw an over 25% reduction in energy and water usage in 2015 as compared to 2014. People instrumental in this were Kari Lovell (Director of Business & Operations) and Jim Kessenich (Facilities & Maintenance Supervisor), whose leadership helped implement energy efficient upgrades to the building. And of course none of this would have been possible without the faculty, staff, and students of the middle campus for taking the necessary steps to conserve electricity and water.
