Planning for the 39th annual Grant Park Mothball is now underway. This year, the event will be held in November, and the party planning committee is in the process of finalizing the band, location and date.
You’ll have to wait until August to find out this year’s theme, but for now, the planning committee can tell you that you’ll want to get all dolled up because it’ll be the bee’s knees. It’s no baloney–you’ll want to tell everyone it’s the elephant’s eyebrows.
The Mothball costume party is a neighborhood tradition that spans almost four decades. In the 1970s, it started out as a potluck dinner to thank everyone who volunteered for the Tour of Homes and was traditionally held the same weekend as the Tour. As time passed, the party grew bigger until it turned into its own event.
Past themes have included everything from Moulin Rouge and pirates to James Bond and last year’s Hootenanny. More than 250 people attended dressed up in all kinds of crazy costumes. Special guests Amber Nash and Lucky Yates–Pam and Kreiger from “Archer” and regulars at Dad’s Garage– were our guest MCs, and Seven Handle Circus performed.
The event featured signature moonshine drinks, craft brew from Wild Heaven and food and prizes from local restaurants and retailers. Who knows what’s in store for this year?
If you are interested in volunteering, the committee is looking for people to help with decorations, marketing and more. It’s the cat’s meow.
