The Friends of East Atlanta Library (FEAL) have many events planned for the summer, as well as supporting a strong line-up of summer reading programs organized by the library staff. FEAL is collecting book donations now for its summer book sale to be held on Saturday, June 28, at the library from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Any gently-used books may be dropped off with the East Atlanta Branch circulation desk during regular library hours.
The library’s Summer Reading Program will have its kick-off June 7 at 12:00 pm with a bounce house, snow cone machine and snacks on the grill. This event is free and open to everyone. Following the kick-off, many programs are scheduled in addition to the regular story times. Programs include a Hip-Hop Dance Workshop for Teens, a Filmmaking workshop and a Wii competition. For the complete schedule or more information, contact the East Atlanta Library Branch.
FEAL is also hosting an art exhibit of children’s literature illustrations. The Ashley Bryan Traveling Exhibit of Illustrated Africana Children’s Literature, featuring the artwork of Shadra Strickland and Michele Wood, will be on display in the library meeting room from June 9 through August 11. On Saturday, June 14, FEAL will host a Virtual Meet and Greet with illustrator Shadra Strickland. Children will be able to hear a presentation and interact with this award-winning illustrator. On Saturday, June 21, there will be a Lunch and Learn for older audiences with illustrator Gregory Christie. The presentation highlights Christie’s contribution to the world of black art and children’s literature. For more information about these programs, contact FEAL at friendsofeal@gmail.com or LIKE the Friends of East Atlanta on Facebook.
On July 19 beginning at 10:00 am, FEAL will co-host a festival of storytelling to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Atlanta. Partnering with the B*ATL organization, FEAL has scheduled performers including Akbar, Mama Koku, Natalie Jones, and an appearance by “Abraham Lincoln.” This is a just one of many events commemorating the 150th anniversary.
