Balancing the duties of work and the urge to make an impact in the world can challenge the delicate nature of any relationship. In Horizon Theatre’s production of Donald Margulies’s new drama Time Stands Still, Sarah and James, a photojournalist and foreign correspondent who have been together for years, have just returned home from the war in Iraq, after Sarah was injured by a roadside bomb. As Sarah recovers, their relationship is threatened when James’s yearning for conventional domesticity comes into conflict with Sarah’s desire to return to documenting the realities of war. The Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies’ latest work has been quoted, “crackles with bright wit and intelligence” according to The New York Times. It received a Tony nomination for Best Play in 2010.
Horizon’s production features an all-Atlanta cast led by the city’s most acclaimed actors. Carolyn Cook from Horizon’s productions of The Clean House, The Syringa Tree, and Home/Kabul plays photojournalist Sarah. Robin Bloodworth is paired with Cook as Sarah’s partner James. Chris Kayser returns to Horizon as Sarah’s long-time editor and friend Richard after a successful run of Superior Donuts last season. And rounding out the cast in her Horizon debut is Ann Marie Gideon.
Throughout the run of Time Stands Still, audiences will be able to join in post-show discussions after select performances to delve deeper into the play’s stories and themes and help answer the question, how do you find happiness in a world that seems to have gone crazy?
Performances of Time Stands Still run September 14–October 14. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 8:00pm, Saturday at 3:00pm and 8:30pm, and Sunday at 5:00pm. Tickets start at $20.
