The Drew East Lake Eagles Soap Box Derby racing team is preparing to compete in the Soapbox Derby Gravity Challenge in Akron, Ohio on May 14 through May 16.
Drew Charter School has unofficially participated in this race before but are now taking it to the next level. This year Drew is allowing elementary school students to build, design and drive the cart in this annual race as a class. The team’s experience has been awesome along the way. Although it has been challenging and exciting, students learned new math concepts and how to use different types of tools, such as the Allen wrench. Since December, the team has been working hard to prepare for this event and is in the final stages of the building process.
The team thanks their coaches–Ms. Bryant, Mr. Martin and Mr. Rashid–and financial sponsor, PNC Bank, for their support. The team also wishes to thank Stein Steel in Reynoldstown for their donation of the steel plates for our extra weight. It is our hope for this year’s team that our supporters who are present in Atlanta will see us bring home the trophy.
If you would like to support us or for additional information, please contact Courtney Bryant at 404-687-0001 or via email at teacherbryant@gmail.com.
Ed. Note: Shane is a third grade student at Drew Charter School
