In March, the Parkside Elementary School Robotics Team, also known as the Robo Pandas, attended an aquatic robotics competition at Drew Charter and placed in two categories. Led by kindergarten teacher Mr. Joe Weems, this was the first year Parkside entered the competition, and all the students were ecstatic about both participating in the event and the results of their hard work. Below is a report written by a fifth-grade robotics team member. Congratulations, Robo Pandas.
Our Sea Perch Journey
By Olivia Justice
Today was a day full of surprises! No one knew what our fate was. We were all nervous, but confident. Our coaches gave us pep talks, and made us feel comfortable. Our journey began when we boarded the bus.
When we arrived we were amazed! There was so much to see and do, but first we had to know the rules. We were directed to the practice room, where a lady was giving us a lecture. The lecture was about the rules and when it was our turn to compete. When she finished we started practicing our projects.
There are two parts of the competition. The first part is where you compete with your Sea Perch in the pool event. The second part is where you compete with your research project. The team members who compete with the Sea Perch were directed to the pool. The people who compete with the research projects were directed to their assigned presenting rooms.
Before we knew it the competition was over. We placed 2nd in the Sea Perch pool area, and 1st in the research area. The competition was amazing overall, and everyone had a fun learning experience!
