UFO Dispatch from Red’s Farm Preserve

By Rebecca Reese

Howdy neighbors! As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, we’re leaning into the season of gathering, gratitude, and preparing the farm for its next cycle. Here’s what’s sprouting at Red’s Farm this fall.

On Monday, September 22, we joyfully welcomed everyone to our Autumnal Equinox Potluck. This heartwarming tradition, held every solstice and equinox at 5:30 pm, invites neighbors to gather at the farm to share a meal and mark the turn of the season—a zero-waste event, as neighbors bring their own vessels and utensils. Instruments are welcome, and Oz Mettee, new member of the Atlanta Folk Orchestra, serenaded us with his concertina, adding to the sense of community and togetherness.

On Sunday, September 28, the 3rd Grade Bear Den from Cub Scout Pack 688 of Grant Park held a very special meeting with longtime Urban Farm in Ormewood (UFO) friend and farmer, Ken Lovell—a true champion of nature and farming, a brilliant engineer, and a courageous veteran. Ken shared stories about his service and work as an engineer, inspiring the scouts with lessons of resilience and creativity. He then rolled up his sleeves and showed the boys how to prepare the ground for seed planting, guiding them as they planted in the garden themselves, providing a hands-on learning experience for the young scouts.

The afternoon ended with smiles all around as everyone enjoyed Mary Lovell’s delicious homemade brownies and some refreshing drinks. It was a joyful way to celebrate community, learning, and the bonds of friendship. Our deepest gratitude goes to Ken and Mary, and to the memory of Red, whose vision created such a beautiful place where neighbors, families, and multiple generations can come together.

Red’s Fall Fest Returns

We’re gearing up for the 2nd Annual Red’s Fall Fest on Sunday, October 26 from 1:00pm to 6:00pm at Red’s Farm Preserve, followed by a generous after-party from 6:00pm to 10:00pm hosted at Side Saddle Wine Saloon & Bar in Boulevard Heights, where 10% of the after-party proceeds will benefit UFO. We hope to see you there, ready to celebrate life and support our community!

Red’s Fall Fest honors the life and legacy of our founder, Farmer Red, while raising support for the UFO’s mission of community, ecology, and connection.

Growing Together

Our garden program continues to flourish this fall, thanks to your ongoing support and participation! Join the waitlist to garden with us at ufoatlanta.org. During the summer, we added new raised beds and enriched the soil. This past month, ECO-PARADIGM fully repaired the greenhouse to restore the farm’s iconic structure. Come for a farm walk and see for yourself, and take pride in being a part of our growing community!
