SAND Meeting – Thursday, July 14, 2022

Call to order. Announcements: Voting rights (3 meetings, or $10 membership). Secretary Officer Candidate Kate Champion – approved unanimously. CMG Neighborhood Renaming/Neighborhood Merging Update: Steve Stuglin provided an update on CMG interest in changing name of neighborhood or merging with Benteen Park. Met with City of Atlanta officials and determined merging with Benteen isn’t a likely outcome. NPU-W General Meetings now begin at 7:30pm on the 4th Wednesday of the month except in November & December when held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

Zone 6 (5 minutes) – Lieutenant Hodge. City/State/School/Other Elected Officials (5 minutes per) – Yasamin from Councilmember Bakhtiari’s office: New Zone 6 Commander – Major Andrea Webster. Passed two resolutions at the most recent Council meeting. $500K donation to Atlanta Volunteer Lawyer Foundation to pilot program for access to legal counsel for people facing eviction. Any sort of police action against abortion care and reproductive care is the lowest priority for the police department, and no city money will be dedicated to those efforts.

Beautification (5 minutes) – Sign Topper Update: Ormewood has finalized their toppers, and the other neighborhoods are working on their designs. A grant will fund initial allocation of toppers, and to fill in the remaining toppers, SAND will have an “adopt a topper” program. Toppers will be installed in the fall.

Communication (2 minutes) – Like SAND on Facebook, and follow us on Instagram and Twitter. Please submit any ideas for the newsletter to us.

Treasurer (5 minutes) – Amazon Smile / Kroger Rewards. Trolleys available for $45 unpainted.

Public Safety (5 minutes) – The 4th Senior Citizen Public Safety Event hosted by Councilmembers Bakhtiari and Bond will be held  on July 15 from 10:00am-12:30pm at the East Lake YMCA

Transportation (5 minutes) – Trial closure of westbound lane into the Kroger/Chick-Fil-A plaza at the intersection of Bill Kennedy Way and Faith Avenue extended to August. New all-way stop at the intersection of Garrett Street and Bill Kennedy Way. New all-way stop at the intersection of Custer Avenue and Funston Street to be installed the week of July 11. Skyler Hassan provided a presentation on stop sign conversions proposal for safety purpose throughout NPU-W. SMAWG Update from Brent Huff – Paving of Moreland is on schedule; striping is next.

Land Use and Zoning (LU&Z) (5 minutes per) – Z-22-36/CDP-22-26 (706/708 McDonough Blvd): Applicant seeks to change the zoning designation from the current R-4 to MR-4B in order to construct 38 townhomes. LUZ: Deferred for 30 days to the August cycle. Meeting scheduled for 2:00pm on July 18 at the site. Update on SAP-22-10 (Moreland Plaza Mall): City decision Pending. NPU-W has provided a third and final round of comments to City Planning based on the revised site plan. The Atlanta Regional Commission’s review and Atlanta City Planning’s DRI process were completed in June, and their comments and views mostly align with our supplied concerns.
