I remember when I became pregnant and moved to Grant Park. I fell in love with the charm of the neighborhood and friendly people. Being new to the community and new to motherhood I sought other moms to share our experiences and friendships. Like so many of you walking around the park, I stumbled upon the playground and met a new mom, Erin Ringstrom. She told me about the Grant Park Parents Network (GPPN) and introduced me to her playgroup. This was exactly what I was looking for, a social group of new moms to compare our craziest moments of the week so we wouldn’t go nuts.
As our children grew out of playgroups and we met less often, the question became, “how can we continue to bond besides birthday parties and Leaping Lizards?” Besides the traditional events we all looked forward to, such as the Egg Hunt (Spring Festival), Halloween Parade, and Winter Wonderland, I wanted to have greater opportunities for all families to come together throughout the year.
To accomplish this, I felt there was no better way than to become deeply involved in the Grant Park Parents Network. The organization was formed years ago by moms for moms, and continues on today thanks to all the volunteers and board members. In early 2012 I learned that our wonderful president, Meg Boeff, decided to step down and I accepted the president’s role enthusiastically. One year later, monthly events are common – from puppet shows and ALL-plays to one-of-a kind events such as the summer social, art sculpture “Bits n Pieces”, partnering with the Grant Park Conservancy for the Lantern Parade, astronomy viewing, and “Branching out for Wildlife” in the park. Another goal I strive for is to assist our schools and parks. Community campaigns like collecting box top logos and developing the Friends of Ormond-Grant Park is a benefit to all who live here. This is the beauty of the Grant Park Parents Network.
The best part of this past year has been meeting people and making new friends. There are so many talented and fun people around us. It warms my heart to know I can walk around my neighborhood and will likely receive a big smile from a friend.
Everyone involved at the GPPN builds on the strength of those before us and helps to make it better as we grow. It has been a pleasure to be the President, but there comes a time to let someone else lead the charge. I have announced my resignation to the board as I am embarking on my next exciting journey here in Grant Park. My mission continues on to serve families and to strengthen the neighborhood.
