While the Maynard Jackson Campus on Glenwood Avenue in Grant Park is undergoing a massive renovation, the school has been in session at the old Coan Middle School campus on Hosea Williams Drive in Edgewood/Kirkwood since last August. It began the school year with a temporary principal. In October, Mrs. Stephanie Stephens Johnson, Ed.S was appointed as Principal for Maynard Jackson High School.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Alabama and was raised in a family of educators. She graduated from the University of Alabama and went on to get her Master’s in Secondary Education from the University of West Alabama. She also has Master’s Certifications in School Counseling and Educational Leadership from the University of South Alabama. She has almost completed her Doctorate in Education.
Mrs. Johnson taught and was a school counselor for six years in Mobile, Alabama before relocating with her husband and three children to Fayetteville, Georgia. Since then she has served as lead guidance counselor, assistant principal, and principal in various Clayton County Schools. She led Sequoyah High School to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in three consecutive years moving it into a “Distinguished” school rating from “Needs Improvement.” Mrs. Johnson’s experience with testing, college admission requirements, and special preparatory programs has influenced and enabled hundreds of students to enter Ivy League and Tier I Schools (such as Harvard, Yale, Brown, Columbia, Duke, and Stanford). Graduation rates at schools that she has led have been consistently in the top percentiles of their system. She has won numerous awards and honors through her career.
Mrs. Johnson is active in her church where she has volunteered in the extended care program and as a Mission Friends teacher. She is also an active fan with her Alma Mater, which has kept her busy with Alabama Crimson Tide football through the bowl season. She finds time to play classical piano as well as the trumpet, reads for pleasure, and loves spending time with her family.
The Porch Press welcomes Mrs. Johnson to the neighborhood and wishes her and her students success in this school year and as they look forward to moving back into a beautiful new home.
