Oakland’s late-spring calendar is filled with family-friendly opportunities to experience the cemetery in unique and educational ways. May is National Preservation Month, and to celebrate, Historic Oakland Foundation’s preservation team will lead two “Behind-The-Stones” preservation tours. Tickets for these tours tend to go quickly, so get yours now. Informational signage will also be posted throughout the cemetery all month long, giving visitors a chance to roam the grounds and learn about restoration projects on site.
On June 17, Oakland will host a Juneteenth celebration of freedom from 10:30am to 1:00pm in the Historic African American Burial Grounds section. This family-friendly FREE event will feature live music, food trucks, storytelling, tours and more!
Love Oakland and interested in getting more involved? June is Membership Month, and those who become a member of the Foundation or renew their memberships will be entered to win some great prizes – including Capturing the Spirit of Oakland Halloween tour tickets! Keep an eye out for more information on the perks of becoming an Oakland member during June.
The Foundation is now offering its guided tours on more days of the week than ever. The 75-minute “Sights, Symbols and Stories of Oakland” overview tour happens Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during May and June, and “special topic tours” dive deeper into cemetery history and lore on Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30am.
