Kingfisher’s Toy Basket Project

Abigail Henderson and Damon Benson enjoy reading at the new table and chairs bought by Friends of East Atlanta Library through a grant from the East Atlanta Beer Festival. Additional furniture for adults will be coming soon.

This year, the kids at Kingfisher Academy on Moreland Avenue are planning a different kind of Secret Santa project. Instead of trading gifts among the students, this year they are going to buy small gifts, wrap them beautifully, and give them to the Department of Family and Children’s Services (DFCS) for children in foster care. Deciding not to exchange gifts at school took a lot of thought, but after lots of discussion, it was decided to try this different approach.
Kids love to give gifts and really enjoy wrapping them, and they expect this idea to be fun. Everyone will get to use glitter on the wrappings, and that’s always a shiny, messy, but thoroughly enjoyable process. If anyone in the neighborhood would like to help, the sort of toys we’re looking for, are sets of jacks, small matchbox cars, jump ropes, mancala games, checkers, majorette batons, games of Yatzee, and similar items. They will be collected and delivered on December 19.
