GPNA Meeting Minutes – Tuesday, August 20, 2024

Call to Order–7:30pm.

President’s Introduction. 2024 Steering Committee Nomination (Transportation – Sam Lawrence): Sam provided a brief introduction. He  has been a Grant Park resident for over six years and has a strong interest in transportation and public infrastructure. His appointment will be voted on for approval  at the next meeting.

2024 Steering Committee Vacancies: Fundraising Chair, Philanthropy Chair, Economic Chair. Custer Avenue Capacity Relief Multi-Benefit Project – 9/12, 6:30pm-7:30pm. Barack and Michelle Obama Academy, 970 Martin Street SE, Atlanta, GA 30315. Steve Carr provided some additional context and encouraged people to attend the meeting. The Custer Basin includes Grant Park, Chosewood Park, Peoplestown, Mechanicsville, and Summerhill. 

Treasure’s Update: Monthly income statement & balance sheet.

Public Official Update: Jennifer Freeman joined on behalf of Congresswomen Nikema Williams’ Office. 100 Peachtree Street NW, Suite 1920, Atlanta, Georgia 30303. Neighbors with issues can go to Congresswomen Williams’ website  and click “assistance with government agencies” and fill out a form to share more details. 

Item One – Public Safety: APD Zone 6 & Fire Station 10 Update – Lt. Watkins (Morning Watch Commander, Zone 6) joined the meeting. The neighborhood has been pretty quiet in terms of crime. Taos Wynn with the Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation joined the call and offered to be an ongoing resource for any questions or concerns. Committee Updates – Vote on Recommendation to NPU-W – Alcohol License Application (New Business) of Home-Grown Industries of Grant Park, LLC d/b/a Mellow Mushroom – 1015 Boulevard, Suite 100A, Atlanta, GA 30312; Mr. C. Kevin Bridges, Proposed Agent. Vote was held for recommended approval of the events to the NPU-W. Approved without opposition. Change of Ownership at Shell Station on Hill Street – Motion to approve change of ownership at the Shell Station passed without opposition. Upcoming Events & Advisory Votes – Vote was held for recommended approval of the events to the NPU-W. The events were approved without opposition. 9/28: Queen’s Day Atlanta, 10/12: Atlanta Wine & Jazz Festival, 10/18-10/19: Capturing the Spirit of Oakland, 11/3: Oakland Cemetery Day of the Dead Celebration.

Item Two – Transportation: Committee Updates – Atlanta Streets Alive, transforms our streets into car-free spaces for people to walk, bike, and explore. September 15, October 20, and November 17, along the route from Gordon White Park to Grant Park (along Georgia Avenue). Event time: 1:00pm-5:00pm. Street Closure: 11:00am-6:00pm. GPNA ASA Tent Planning Meeting – 8/26 at Elsewhere Brewing. Email Robert Selby at treasurer@gpna.org to secure a spot for the planning meeting. Romy Aura Maloon, Atlanta Streets Alive Manager – Neighbors and businesses can sign up to participate as an “activity” at atlantastreetsalive.org. Once you fill out a form (goes to Romy & fellow coordinator), you will be grouped with similar activities and there will be hubs. Early next week, the public digital map will be updated and participants will receive additional details.  Trails ATL is trying to create a citywide network of safe, inviting, and equitably accessible trails and just put out a presentation and map of potential trail improvements in City Council District 1, check it out and then complete their survey.

Item Three – Land Use & Zoning (LUZ): Potential Master Plan Concept – A lot of our neighborhoods have a small scale master plan (Glenwood Park, for example). Grant Park has never had one aside from the area along Memorial. Sky Hassan (LUZ Chair)  is considering working on a light master plan concept for the neighborhood for the parts of the neighborhood that aren’t in the historic district. The second module for the updated zoning ordinance will be September 30, location to be determined. For more information, visit https://atlzoning.com.
