At long last, the much anticipated Glenwood/Moreland Realignment Project is getting underway. After many public forums and many revisions of the project, it has finally progressed to the advanced stages of development. The city of Atlanta Project Manager and DOT are making the last adjustments to the final design, and the right-of-way acquisitions will begin on the next calendar.
If you are new to the area or have been out of the loop on the details, the project will solve several issues at this intersection. One of the problems is the traffic bottleneck trying to navigate across Moreland coming from either west or east on Glenwood. The realignment will utilize a two-light change cycle for the intersection with westbound and eastbound left turn lanes. This is accomplished by slicing off a corner of the northeast corner property and the southwest corner property making this a straight-shot. It will extend on Glenwood from Hemlock on the west to Brownwood on the east.
Another benefit of the realignment is the extension of the East Atlanta streetscape plan. Sidewalk-mounted period street lamps will be installed; sidewalks will be repaired and re-laid;, additional trees and other greenery will be planted; and the storm water system that pools during heavy rains will be improved. But the huge benefit will be the inclusion of bike lanes all the way from East Atlanta Village to Glenwood Park, which will tremendously enhance the interest in commercial development in the village. It was recently announced that work is to commence shortly on the extension of The Beltline through Glenwood Park. This will allow bicycle traffic to move from Piedmont Park to East Atlanta Village.
Once the final plans are completed and the right-of-ways are acquired, the construction should commence. The target date is October 2016. Neighbors have been assured that only one lane of traffic will be disturbed during the construction period which should be finished by spring of 2017.
