Elected Officials’ Reports
Council Member Bakhtiari’s office is not present. But a written update was summarized by voice by Chase and pasted into chat. Two candidates for city council president have been invited to EACA. At-large candidates will also be invited.
Arts & Culture Update
Our EACA Arts and Culture team is partnering with Greg Mike to host a mural painting at the upcoming Strut. The mural will be on the fence behind the Brownwood Park playground. Come be a part of this unique event during the East Atlanta Strut!
Parks Update
The new Brownwood pavilion and adult fitness area have been completed. The pavilion can be reserved via the city’s iParks website. The rec center is reserved via the East Atlanta Kids Club website. The EACA Parks Committee, in collaboration with Park Pride and Delta Air Lines volunteers, hosted an invasive clean-up day on Friday, September 5. Thank you very much to those who came out to serve our community!
Upcoming Opportunity: Saturday, September 20. International Coastal Cleanup Day. Neighbors will come together at Brownwood Park and Ormewood Forest for a community day of action. Even though we don’t live on the coast, our streams flow into larger waterways—so protecting them here makes a real difference downstream. From 10:00am to 1:00pm, we’ll roll up our sleeves to clean trash and debris from streams, tackle invasive plants, and restore the beauty of our green spaces. Email parks@eaca.net for more information.
Upcoming Opportunity: Month of October. Trees Atlanta Forest Stewardship Training. We are so thrilled that Trees Atlanta will be hosting their annual Forest Stewardship Training in our very own Ormewood Forest. The training is designed to introduce concepts for identifying plants, environmental effects of invasive plants, and methods of control for the everyday community steward and delivers a certification at the end.
Land Use and Zoning Update – Jenny Murray and Holly Sasnett
Z-25-057 (1037 Bouldercrest Road) Update from Chase: applicant plans to amend the errors in their application and requested a deferral from the city. As a result, this application should have been deferred during the ZRB public hearing on September 4. The revised application will need to go through the EACA/NPU-W review process once received. The next EACA LUZ meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 29.
Neighbor in Need Update – Robin Polster and Stephanie Parker
Last Saturday, Neighbor in Need, which helps longtime neighbors with home repairs, hosted the East Atlanta Poker Tournament at Midway. Lots of folks came out to play (and sponsored the event!) which raised nearly $5,000 to be used for future repairs. Follow NIN on Facebook and Instagram. To volunteer, contact neighborinneed@eaca.net.
Public Safety Update
Myron Polster, EACA and NPU-W Public Safety Lead – There have been some recent crime challenges on Brownwood Avenue. Maj. Webster has been contacted twice in the last two weeks with requests for extra patrols. Myron is not sure whether those have happened. There have been new signups from the Brownwood area to the East Atlanta Security Patrol and so EASP is increasing its patrols of that area.
Q: Brownwood resident who backs up to the park. Both of her side neighbors’ homes were broken into recently, and someone tried to break the lock on her fence. There’s a concern because no Atlanta police officers have come to the houses when crimes are reported. Why?
A: No officers were at meeting. Myron suggests calling the security patrol after calling 911 and if a patrol officer is on duty, they will come and usually are faster than the police. Also, if the police department doesn’t respond, call back and request again. Contact security patrol via https://www.easecuritypatrol.com/contact-us.html.
Q: When crimes are reported with suspects and vehicles described, nobody ever hears if there
were any sightings or arrests made. How do we find out?
A: Myron says normally he hears when someone is arrested after high-profile crimes, but he hasn’t heard about these cases. Citizens need to call zone commanders to request info.
Announcements
East Atlanta Kids Club Brownwood Bike Rally – Saturday, September 13. Don’t miss this fun and impactful event; a day to celebrate cycling as an anchor of EAKC’s programming and to recognize the community of support among local cycling groups, corporate sponsors, local businesses, and East Atlanta neighbors. Volunteer spots are still open!
East Atlanta Strut – It’s time to volunteer for your neighborhood festival, the East Atlanta Strut on Saturday, September 27. Nearly 10,000 folks will hit the streets of East Atlanta for a party like no other! The all-volunteer Strut committee works year-round, but we need two hours of YOUR time on Strut day to make it happen.
East Atlanta Farmers market continues every Thursday starting at 4:00pm with various fun events coming up. See https://cfmatl.org/eav/ for more info. If you were at the in-person meeting, you could have received a $5 gift card for produce at the market.
EACA Call for Volunteers – We’re excited about our role in shaping East Atlanta to be the community we envision for the future. But we won’t get there without engaged members of the community to help make it happen. Please reach out to president@eaca.net or any member of the EACA Executive Committee to find out how and where you can support. You can also check out our Volunteer page at eaca.net/volunteer.
