Public Safety Update
Zone 6 Update, Lt. Chris Brown, chrisbrown@atlantaga.gov, Crime down 33 percent overall for the month in the city, and up in East Atlanta with a small spike in burglaries and auto theft. Banshee shooting investigation is active with businesses are cooperating with video. They are checking into gang activity that sometimes is related to local schools. Other crimes have been domestic disputes. There was a shooting at Flat Shoals and Bouldercrest in which police are not getting as much cooperation they’d like from victims. They plan some details in our neighborhood to fight the crime spike.
EACA had asked about policing in areas of DeKalb near East Atlanta that are trying to be annexed to the city. This annexation is up to the state, but if it happens, the expectation is that there will be enough new officers in the pipeline to staff the new areas. Zone 6 mold issues have been remedied so they hope to be moving back in soon.
Q: Was there a suspect arrested in the string of shed burglaries and can victims do anything to help with the prosecution? Also, is there a way to get property back? A: Part one, probably not any help they need. Part two: It depends if the suspect was arrested with stolen property. If so, victims should get a call to identify their property. Q: Can you clarify on Banshee update? People from video charged? A: They are looking into ballistics, but they haven’t been able to get anything from the videos. Q: Video from the Banshee incident was supposedly going to be sent to Homeland Security. The investigation seems to be confused and communication back to the neighborhood has not been great. A: Lt. Brown will try to get a meeting put together with police reps, Chase and Nate.
Elected Officials’ Reports
Council Member Bakhtiari’s Office, Patrick Husbands, council member is working on Intown Cares funding, Head Start initiatives and affordable housing. Re tax allocation districts: The administration wants to expand those districts to 2055 and use the money to raise bonds for infrastructure. Bakhtiari feels this is being rushed and should wait until the new city council members are seated. Q: Thanks to Liliana on her approach to the tax districts. Q: Much money that had already been set aside for infrastructure hasn’t been spent, according to the AJC. Is there a way to see reports on how the money has been spent. A: Patrick says it’s difficult to pin down. Some projects have been completed, such as trolley-related projects, and others have been pushed back for various reasons. Q: Is there any update on the BATL Trail? A: No. That was on the TSPLOST list but about 75 percent of District 5’s projects have not been started, although Bakhtiari’s office has been pushing them. Q: What can be done to get something done on the Banshee shooting? A: They have been seeking info from police on several murders in the district and they will try to get more on Banshee. There was then more discussion about movement on the Banshee investigation. Comment: Thanks for work on the signaled crosswalk on Glenwood. Q: RE the BATL Trail. One parcel of land is being auctioned online, but city doesn’t have the money to bid on it. Current high bid is $3,000. City should be able to swoop in and buy it. A: The parcel is on McPherson, and he has passed the idea of buying it on to the conservation fund. It’s difficult to get the city to buy these parcels.
East Atlanta Parents Network: Celebrating Success – Our Parents Network hosted Fall Fest on Sunday, November 9.
