Parks Update – Ryan Downey: Ribbon cutting for the new playground equipment took place Tuesday, June 18. Participants included Storm Reid, Council Member Bakhtiari, and many members of the community, along with several dogs. Tennis court resurfacing/mural was completed in early June. There also was drainage work done to keep the courts from flooding. Thanks so much to EACA’s Friends of Brownwood Park team and East Atlanta Kids Club for the many hours over the past 12 months discussing options, seeking out community feedback, and finalizing plans. There will be a volunteer day on Friday, July 19, from 8:30am to 11:30am. Note that parking at the park will be limited.
Transportation Update – Zach Kosub: May Avenue – The Transportation committee is working on a Tactical Urbanism grant to enable slower speed of traffic down May Avenue given its designation as a Safe Route to School. The Committee will give a preview of the application and invite the community to join the next Transportation Committee to provide input and feedback. The initial intersection in this project will be May and Maynard Terrace. Committee is proposing a four-way stop and painted curb extensions to slow traffic on Maynard, along with crosswalks. Fayetteville, Flat Shoals corridor improvements – Neighbors from the area around Fayetteville Road and Flat Shoals Road are working to bring improvements to the area. They will present a request for a traffic assessment for input/vote by the EACA General Body. Read about the work they’re doing. Read the formal request for a traffic assessment. EACA body votes to support this request without objection.
Elected Officials’ Reports
Council Member Bakhtiari’s Office, Patrick Husbands: Council passed a budget last month and council also arranged for a grant procedure for businesses hurt by the water outage. Public meeting with Trails ATL at Lane Carson Rec Center on July 24 at 6:30. Q: Solid waste fees are going up. Why didn’t DPW come to any public meetings, such as the NPU meetings, to present this? A: Council did try to attach some conditions to this. He’ll share more info in the chat.
Land Use and Zoning Update – Jenny Murray: Non-voting items presented for awareness. 740 Moreland Avenue – Business license was issued for a tire shop. Neighbors have appealed the granting of the license, because that business type is not permitted based on the zoning. Hearing date before the Board of Zoning Adjustment is July 11, and the public is welcome to attend. 1640 Flat Shoals Avenue – Rezoning R-4 to PDH. Additional details provided by applicant; questions around tree survey, environmental impact, development plan details, storm water runoff, and more sent to attorney with no response yet. Applicant did not attend EACA LUZ on 6/24 as planned. No further communication from applicant since then. If you live nearby, please reach out to landuse@eaca.net and volunteer to gather your neighbors to get opinions on this. 659 Stokeswood Avenue (update) – Potential tree removal near/within the watershed buffer. Neighbors requested the application documents via FOIA request. As a result, the plans are now available for review on-line via Accela for the public. (Search Submitted Records, then type in address in top right search box). As of 7/3, the plans have been approved by the Bldg, Sewer and Zoning Depts and are under review by the Site Development Dept. More info to be provided during meeting Tuesday. NC-16 Update – It passed! This zoning identifies the types of businesses the neighborhood would like to see at the Bouldercrest and Flat Shoals triangle area and creates guidelines for development. Upcoming city training/events – Plan A and Zoning 2.0 are being discussed at various public forums. Please see slide presentation/meeting recording for details on this complicated subject. Announcements/Community Updates
Ryan Downey on EAKC’s Brownwood Bike Rally. The annual bike rally will be September 14. He’s in the process of getting the permits and needs EACA to vote for the rally. Sponsors and volunteers are welcome. See the website. EACA votes to support this permit application without objection.
Steve Carr – The NPU-W is resurrecting an environmental committee.
