Elected Officials’ Reports

Councilmember Bakhtiari’s Office, Patrick Husbands: Bakhtiari introduced legislation passed this week to limit vape shops to farther than 1,000 feet from each other or from a daycare or school.
She also passed legislation to require lighter color roofs on new builds to help lessen the urban heat island effect.

DeKalb Commissioner Nicole Massiah’s office was on the agenda but was not present.

Public Safety Update

Zone 6 Update – Sgt. Clanton: Crimes against people are down. Robberies are up, particularly of equipment from workers’ trucks, and theft from vehicles. There was an aggravated assault on Moreland (person was shot at) and a suspect is being sought.

Public Safety Committee Update

Event Permit Application (approved without dissent): 21st Brownwood Bike Rally (Ryan Downey) will be September 13. Sponsors and volunteers are welcome.

Event Permit Application (approved without dissent): WigOut Event. WigOut (OF) 9-13-2025.pdf (Ben Cheaves) Festival and fundraiser for trans people and immigrants in need. 

Alcohol Permit (for awareness): Alcohol Permit from Eastside Swim and Social (872 Cavanaugh Ave SE, Atlanta, GA 30316). Permit was voted up by EACA under the condition a “good neighbor agreement” was reached. It will be up for a vote at NPU-W on Wednesday, July 16, and then will go before the city license review board. Update from Jake Lee-High, a neighbor working with the applicant: The agreement is still being negotiated, with noise abatement being the main sticking point. jake@futurecolossal.com

Land Use and Zoning Update: Jenny Murray and Holly Sasnett

Application for vote: 512 Flat Shoals Road. Z-25-54 – Z-25-54 Ordinance.pdf. An ordinance by Councilmember Liliana Bakhtiari to waive certain provisions in Section 16-32B.002 of the City of Atlanta Code of Ordinances related to personal service establishments in the East Atlanta Village Commercial District to allow a salon and beauty school at 512 Flat Shoals, the Marbut building; and for other purposes, Context: the request is to waive a requirement of the NC-2 legislation to allow the opening of a salon suite and beauty school. The potential tenant appeared via Zoom and took several questions, including noting the hope is they start business in six months. Q: Have neighboring salons or barber shops been notified? A: The committee has not done that. Q: Does this open the door to other restricted businesses? A: This ordinance covers just this business. But NC-2 should be looked at for revisions. Recommendation from the committee: The EACA LUZ committee is recommending support for this ordinance. Recommendation accepted without objection.

Announcements / Community Updates

Trees Atlanta volunteer days are once a month. There is one July 12 and another on August 2. Check the EACA newsletter for details. There will be a chalk art event at Brownwood Park on July 12 at 10:00am.

That closed the meeting for Zoom participants. In-person attendees broke into groups to talk more in depth about core EACA goals, such as Village Vibrancy and recruiting members.
