Vice President, Dorian DeBarr called the meeting to order at 7:09pm and welcomed all new and returning attendees.
Dorian extended a special welcome to the new membership committee: Vic Thomas, Alex and Hanna Hope, who are taking over for Rose Bigelow, who will be moving out of the area.
David White, Principal at Burgess Peterson Academy, introduced himself and updated the community on how the first few weeks of the school year have been going. BPA will be joining EACA tonight and is looking forward to having an EACA yard sign on the campus. Principal White announced that BPA has achieved “Top Ten” in traditional public schools in APS this year, going from number 11 to number 9. The school also had significant growth in mathematics, going from number 13 to number 8. Tours are available for prospective students and their parents and are given on Wednesdays, while school is in session, so that participants can experience what an actual school day is like. Public Safety: Major Peek, Zone 6 Commander for APD spoke about crime trends in the last 28 days; there were two robberies reported in the Zone. A suspect has been identified in one of the incidents and APD is working to get a warrant for that suspect. Car break-ins continue to be an issue. The Major encouraged everyone in the neighborhood to keep nothing of value in their cars and reminded attendees of the Clean Car Campaign – no guns, electronics or bags left in cars. Britney Lovett will be new Crime Prevention Inspector and she is hoping to come to an upcoming EACA meeting. He has met with Myron Polster, coordinator of the East Atlanta Security Patrol, recently about crime trends in East Atlanta. APD publishes weekly incident reports through their Public Relations department and through the Security Patrol via Myron Polster. Lt. Floyd responded to Steve Carr’s concerns about the carjacking in the Edgewood Retail District that occurred two years ago.
Eliuth Espinoza from the “Light it Blue Campaign,” which supports World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) on April 2, spoke about her own experience with an autistic grandson. She is requesting that East Atlanta host a Light it Blue event on April 2, 2017. EACA suggested that Ms. Espinoza present a formal proposal to the Board so that the Board can assess what would be required from EACA in the form of financial and asset commitments. A motion was made to review the proposal at the point that it is formally submitted. The motion was approved by the voting membership. David White added that Burgess Peterson has a pre-K autism class.
Under the Harvest Moon: A gala to benefit Neighbor in Need will be held on October 15 at the Zuber-Jarrell House. The theme will be “Rustic Chic” and the event will feature food from notable Atlanta chefs, signature cocktails, a silent auction, and an architect’s tour of the historic residence. VIP tickets ($100 pre-sale, $125 after) will include early entrance, a separate home tour, unlimited drinks and 1 extra hour of cocktails on the front porch. General Admission early ticket purchases will be $50 pre-sale ($65 after). Approximate 200 total attendees are expected. Tickets are available for purchase at each East Atlanta Farmer’s Market and on line by following the links at www.eaca.net.
Sam Gader with Community Farmer’s Market is the new coordinator for the East Atlanta Farmer’s Market and offered market yard signs for anyone who would like to have one in their front yard. LUZ: The Land Use and Zoning committee meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm. at the Beulah Heights University Complex. All are welcome to attend. The full NPU-W meeting, which is also at the Buelah Heights University Complex, meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm. Andy Schneggenburger gave an update on the 770 Shadowridge parcel, indicating that neighbors would like to engage the city to preserve the property as greenspace. Continuing the conversation about a collaborative “Affordable Housing Statement,” which would be adopted by each neighborhood in the NPU, feedback was solicited. Brownwood Bike Rally: The Rally will be held on Saturday, September 17 and is free for children. Adult races are $10 and $20, depending on which race you participate in. There will be a variety of raffle prizes and raffle tickets are $5 per ticket or 5 tickets for $20. All proceeds benefit EAKC. Volunteer Rally Marshalls are needed. Transportation: The Transportation committee meets on the 4th Wednesday of every month at Beulah Heights University on Berne Street from 6:30pm to 7:30pm., just before the NPU and LUZ meetings. Joe Peery announced that there are several Save the Old Atlanta Prison Farm events coming up and that tours will resume on Sunday, September 18with Brunch at Entrenchment Creek Park at 10:00am. On Saturday, October 22 there will be a benefit for the Prison Farm at 529 in East Atlanta on Flat Shoals Road. There will be live bands and comedians. Tickets are $10 for the event. EAV-O-Ween is the last Saturday in October (October 29) and will kick off at 5:00pm. in the Farmer’s Market lot with the costume contest then trick-or-treating through the EAV business district (around 6:30pm) and a movie in Argosy’s lot. Monday, October 31 is Halloween so neighbors should be prepared to have trick-or-treaters that evening. The EAV-O-Ween committee will be accepting new or slightly used Halloween costumes at the Farmer’s Market every Thursday in October to give to children in need. Donations of candy to supplement what participating EAV businesses are handing out will also be accepted and appreciated.
The Porch Press: Henry Bryant announced that the story featuring the Brownwood Bike Rally would be in the October paper, not the September paper. If you have articles of interest for The Porch Press, please keep the deadlines, which are listed in each edition, in mind.
Tax Concepts is having an open house on Friday, September 23 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. at their office on Flat Shoals Road.
