Hopefully the post office will get this article into your hands in time for the Saturday, February 17 tour that will feature the place where the historic Battle of Atlanta began. The tour begins near the railroad cut on the east side of town and it wanders south across the battlefield through the Kirkwood neighborhood allowing visitors to learn about families who lived there at the time of the battle and since. Of course troop movements and strategies are also a part of the tour. Reservations for this tour sponsored by the Battle of Atlanta Commemoration Organization. (BATL) are required. The Battle of Atlanta Frontlines tour on Sunday afternoon March 5 will be part of the Atlanta Preservation Center’s annual Phoenix Flies Free tours of preservation sites across Atlanta. Over 100 tours are offered throughout the city in conjunction with historic preservation partners like the Battle of Atlanta Commemoration Organization. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of historic preservation, endangered properties, and restored properties in and around Atlanta. The Battle Frontlines tour is BATL’s longest running and most popular tour. There are limited slots for this free tour and reservation slots will fill up fast. This tour is in the East Atlanta neighborhood and features numerous historic sites of battle and neighborhood history. Phoenix Flies lasts from March 3 until March 25 so that there is time to fit in more than one tour or site.
