Georgia Battlefields Association had luck with the weather for the annual tour with Ed Bearss. The March 9 visit to sites related to the Battle of Atlanta started with a chilly morning but finished with a warm, sunny afternoon. The tour ended with a visit to Oakland Cemetery to see the spot from which General Hood directed the July 22, 1864 fighting. The March 10 visit to the battlefields of Ezra Church and Utoy Creek was similarly fortunate. Rain came early on Sunday, March11, but the morning was spent indoors at the Atlanta History Center to see the restored locomotive Texas and the restoration process of the cyclorama depicting the Battle of Atlanta. See www.georgiabattlefields.org/photo_gallery.aspx for more photos.
If you want to learn more about the battle of Atlanta, you can still take a BATL tour on Sunday April 29 at 3:00pm. The Battle in Reverse Tour on that date is the organization’s longest walking tour covering about five miles, tracing the Union frontlines and also part of the Confederate approach. It begins at the end of the battle and moves towards the beginning and along the way visits neighborhood points of interest. The sometimes-brisk walk (hike) will take about 2.5 hours. Tickets and more information are available at www.batlevent.org.
You can also join Georgia Battlefields Association (GBA) members next March (2019) when they plan to cover cavalry actions relating to the Atlanta Campaign, including Brown’s Mill, Lovejoy’s Station, Sunshine Church, and Athens. More info for the GBA tour will be at www.georgiabattlefields.org or www.facebook.com/georgiabattlefields.
