A New Way to Rest in History: Oakland Cemetery Plans Columbarium

By Kristy Gomez, Senior Director, Marketing & Communications

Historic Oakland Cemetery will soon offer Atlantans a fresh, respectful way to become part of its storied grounds. For the first time in over 140 years, the cemetery is planning to construct a columbarium—a granite structure of niche spaces for cremated remains. Located between East Hill and the historic African American Burial Grounds, the project will transform an unused roadway into a serene memorial garden, blending stunning Victorian-inspired landscaping with ornate design details that echo Oakland’s iconic monuments. Niches will go on public pre-sale starting September 3, welcoming individuals of all backgrounds. Proceeds will support the cemetery’s preservation and maintenance efforts.

“This is the first time in nearly 150 years that a new interment space has been available at Oakland,” says CEO Richard Harker, calling the project “a profound milestone” in keeping Atlantans connected to this living history site. Construction will begin in fall 2025, with planned completion in fall 2026.
