On Saturday, June 17, at 2:00pm, the BATL organization will offer its Civil War to Civil Rights Tour. Tickets are available online at www.batlevent.org. Advance purchase will be required.
This walking tour will cover an important corner of the battle that took place on July 22, 1864, in our neighborhood. It includes the site where one of the leading generals was killed, the point where the Battle of Atlanta began, and the site of the first desegregation in Georgia. It is interesting that the Kirkwood and East Atlanta neighborhoods are sites at the intersection of two very important events in American history.
Visitors of the tour will hear about the movements of soldiers, as well as individual stories about the soldiers themselves. They also will hear accounts of neighborhood history and how places that we pass every day played a role in the Civil Rights history of our city, state, and country. Historians now say that The Battle of Atlanta made possible the passing of the amendment to abolish slavery. This tour tells a true and uniquely American tale at the places where events actually happened. In case of rain, make-good tickets will be arranged. Tickets must be purchased before 8:00pm on June 16.
