SAND Meeting Minutes – Thursday, August 14, 2025

Welcome – 2 minutes. Opening remarks – The meeting was called to order at 7:32pm. Approval of July meeting notes – The meeting notes were approved without objection.

City/State/School/Other Elected Officials

APD Lt. Godwin

  • Crime is up due to domestic violence related crimes
  • Property crimes are down Year of Year
  • Overall crime in Zone 6 continues to decline ~ 13%

SAND Activity Updates

  • Festival on October 18 – Noah Trepper (Makers Festival Co-Director) provided an update on activities for the festival. There are no material concerns at this time.
  • Volunteer signup site is live
  • T-Shirt design feedback site is live

Transportation

SMAWG update: Brent Huff (SMAWG Co-Chair) provided an update on activities along Moreland Avenue between I-20 and 1-285:

  • Enhanced Enforcement along Moreland Avenue continues to be a focus of Zone 6 APD.
  • The I-20/Moreland Interchange is underway and on schedule to be completed in late 2027.
  • United/Skyhaven alignment designs have been completed and the contract will be let in February 2026 and should take 18 months.
  • Sidewalks – ATL DOT plans are complete and “ground breaking” should start in early 2026.
  • Crosswalks – Funding has been restored and the project has been let. 5 crosswalks with PHB’s will be installed.  Expected completion is 12-18 months.

SAND 2025 elected positions open. 2026 election upcoming for all positions – All current SAND officers are intending to step down from their roles, and a call to action for community members for new leaders was communicated.

Support letter for Zone 6 headquarters improvements: A motion to approve SAND being a signatory to this letter was approved without objection.

Halidom Event Summary: Mike Snyder provided an update on the “dual event” held at Halidom, including specific recognition for the role Halidom played as sponsor of both events.

  • V-25-129 – 909 Berne Street – Applicant Tai Lewis for owner Brandon Marshall – Applicant seeks variances for front, side and rear yard setbacks, lot coverage, and relative floor area of an accessory structure. LUZ result – Motion to Recommend Denial. Deferred by BZA until October cycle.
  • V-25-135 – 1383, 1385 and 1391 Moreland Avenue – Application withdrawn by applicant. No further action required.
  • Reds Fall Fest – Red’s Farm Preserve – Rachel Ezzo and Kati Heller – October 26, 2025 – A motion to approve this festival application was approved without objection.
