Whispers of History: An East Atlanta Walking Tour

By Carlen Ruth Hultgren

On  Saturday, May 11, Friends of the Madison Theater (FOMO) and the East Atlanta Business Association (EABA), in partnership with the Battle of Atlanta (BATL) organization, will again host the Whispers of History, East Atlanta tour. This tour will travel along the front lines of the Civil War Battle of Atlanta to focal points in historic East Atlanta, providing an action-packed overview of the battle while walking through its most contested land.

Visitors will hear stories of the men who fought in this historic battle that changed the course of US history, the early settlers who forged a life here, and businesspeople who planted the seeds and grew this unique community. Attendees will get a feel for the troop movements, while learning about the history and growth of the significant East Atlanta business node. Learn how this vibrant neighborhood made the journey from pioneer days through the Civil War to the Civil Rights era.

The tour takes about an hour and a half, a leisurely walk, on, behind, and in front of the lines where troops were on the move on July 22, 1864. The tour meets at the EAV Library, 400 Flat Shoals Avenue at 1:45pm with the tour starting at 2:00pm.

At 4:00pm after the tour, join the group for a Meet and Greet, in front of the Madison Theater, 496 Flat Shoals Avenue,  with EABA and FOMO, for  a book signing and Q&A session with Henry Bryant and Katina Van Cronkhite, authors of Images of America: East Atlanta.

The walking tour is $30, or you can purchase the tour with the book, Images of America: East Atlanta, for $50.  Learn the history of your favorite neighborhood.  Learn more about the Madison Theater and the revitalization effort by a group of committed volunteers. Then stay in the Village for dinner, enjoying exclusive offers from EAV businesses, in honor of the tour.
