The Nitty-Gritty Info on Voting

By Riki Bolster

I registered to vote in 1972, the first year after I became a U.S. citizen, and I have voted in every election since. That’s why I urge you to go to the Georgia Secretary of State website and check your own registration status, polling place, and various deadlines. Go to the My Voter Page at www.mvp.sos.ga.gov. Several key deadlines are listed below.

September 15: The earliest day for a registrar to mail absentee ballots for the November General Election and Special Election Runoff for Local and State Offices.

October 5: Deadline to register to vote for the November Election.

October 12: Early voting begins for the November Election.

October 24: Mandatory Saturday voting available for the November Election.

If you are voting absentee and sending your ballot through the mail, your ballot must be postmarked by Election Day, Nov. 3, and delivered up to three days after that, to your county Registration and Elections Board. Please note, this deadline is a new development as of August 31, after a ruling in a case by U.S. District Judge Eleanor Ross. However, if you are voting absentee and using a drop box, you must deliver your ballot by 7pm on Election Day.

The closest drop box for Fulton residents is at the Auburn Avenue Research Library, 101 Auburn Avenue, 30303. DeKalb County residents can use one of three drop boxes available at the Voter Registration Office, 4380 Memorial Drive, Decatur, 30032, or the other nearest drop box located at Sterling at Candler Village, 2536 Melville Ave., Decatur, 30032.
