The South Moreland Avenue Working Group (SMAWG) met in early January with representatives from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT), and the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to discuss the progress of several key projects aimed at improving safety and infrastructure along the Moreland Avenue corridor. Here are some of the key updates:
Medianette Signage: The knocked down signage on the medianettes between I-20 and Portland Ave are scheduled to be replaced. However the GDOT’s sign shop is backlogged from the holidays.
I-20/Moreland Avenue Interchange: Construction on this project, which will eliminate the sharply curved ramps on the northeast corner, is set to begin in Spring 2025 and is expected to take 18-24 months to complete.
I-20/Maynard Terrace Roundabout: The recently opened roundabout, although still being built, has already significantly improved safety and efficiency at this intersection. Atlanta is hosting the International Conference for Roundabouts in June 2025 and the Maynard Terrace Roundabout will be featured/
Moreland Avenue Sidewalk Improvements: ATLDOT will invest $2 million in T-SPLOST funds to enhance sidewalks along Moreland Avenue. The final plan should be finished by the end of January with a project start anticipated by the end of the year.
Moreland Avenue Crosswalks: Designs for five new crosswalks featuring Hawk Signals and Pedestrian Safety Islands are complete. Installation is anticipated to start in late summer 2025 following the allocation of new funding.
United Avenue/Skyhaven Road Alignment: GDOT is actively acquiring the necessary right-of-way to improve this intersection. Construction should start in early 2026. SMAWG is recommending the inclusion of Sharrows and Improved Bicycle Signage in the final design, since the right-of-way acquisition cost prohibited dedicated bike lanes.
SMAWG will continue to advocate for the safety and mobility of all users of the Moreland Avenue corridor.
