SMAWG Project Update

By Brent Huff

In mid-June, the South Moreland Avenue Working Group (SMAWG) met with representatives from the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT), and the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to discuss ongoing projects and improvements in our area. Here’s a quick summary.

Safer Streets on Moreland Avenue: We’re happy to report that increased presence by the Atlanta Police Department on Moreland Avenue is making a difference! We’re seeing a significant drop in street racing, and officers are conducting an average of 55 traffic stops per month.

I-20/Moreland Avenue Interchange Improvement: Work is underway to improve the challenging curved entry/exit ramp at the Moreland Avenue and I-20 interchange. This project is currently 6% complete and is on schedule to be finished in Spring 2027.

Moreland Avenue Sidewalk Upgrades: Good news for pedestrians! Sidewalks along Moreland Avenue, from I-20 to United Avenue, are being repaired or replaced to meet ADA compliance standards. Additionally, paved-over curbs are being raised. This project is being coordinated by ATLDOT utilizing T-SPLOST – Moving Atlanta Forward Funds. SMAWG anticipates seeing the next phase of plans for this project in late August.

Smoother Traffic Flow at I-20/Maynard Terrace: The new double traffic circle at the I-20/Maynard Terrace exit has been a game-changer! It is significantly easing those frustrating exit ramp backups, making commutes much smoother.
