SAND Meeting Minutes – Thursday, March 12, 2026

Welcome and opening remarks – The meeting was called to order at 7:30pm.

Approval of February Meeting Notes – The February meeting notes were approved without objection.

Government Representative Updates

Atlanta Police Department – Lt. Andrew Smith: Citywide crime is down ~19% Year over year. Crime activity continues to be relatively low in the SAND neighborhoods. Theft from vehicles remains the top crime category.

Atlanta City Council Member – District 1: Jason Winston: Ribbon cutting for BeltLine Segments 4 and 5 will be April 16 at 3:00pm. South Boulevard project work continues, with sidewalk improvements continuing for the next 2-3 months. New MARTA bus routes will begin in mid-April. Showcase ATL is a website available for business owners preparing for the FIFA World Cup. The TAD/Neighborhood Revitalization Commission is working on providing an update to Atlanta City Council over the next two months. Engagement with APS and Fulton County Commission is proving challenging.

Atlanta City Council Member – District 5: Liliana Bakhtiari.

Fulton County Commissioner – District 4: Position is vacant.

US Representative (Nikema Williams) – Jennifer Freeman: Arts Competition for high school students; deadline is April 3. Congress in Your Community events continue across the community.

SAND Committee Updates

Education: Update Document – Kristen Silton gave general updates. APS Spring Break is April 6-10.

Land Use and Zoning: Applications can be reviewed on the NPU-W website. Applications for Voting: No SAND LUZ  items. Items for Review and Comment: No SAND LUZ  items.

Makers Festival – Approval for 2026 Ormewood Park Makers Festival permit. Makers Fest will be October 10. Volunteers are needed for the Festival Committee. A vote of approval for the 2026 Ormewood Park Makers Festival Permit was approved without objection.

Social: Next SAND Meet and Greet/Town Hall will be on April 28 starting at 5:45pm.

Transportation: Brent Huff provided a general update on SMAWG activity. ATLDOT and GDOT are working to complete projects ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

Web Updates: Migal Manickaraj gave an update regarding ongoing updates to the sandatlanta.org site.

Voter Education Event will be held September 22 at Cascade United Methodist Church.
