SAND Meeting Minutes – Thursday, July 13, 2023

Due to work and scheduling conflicts SAND President, Kate Champion had to step away. Current Vice-President Mike Snyder will conduct meetings.

Jonathan Harris, the Community Engagement Manager from Fulton County Commissioner Natalie Hall’s office, reported a possible millage rate increasecoming. The Commission is advertising a proposed increase from 9.070 to 9.274. Three public hearings are required (will be in August) before they officially vote on the increase in September. Why is this increase required? The funds would address health care concerns and facilities in south Fulton and $1.6 billion are earmarked to build the new jail. Yes, this will increase property taxes.

A SAND resident raised the issue of why assessments of commercial property are at 53% of their value in comparison to residential property at almost 100%. The community requested some action from our Commissioner directing the Board of Assessors to deal with this issue.

Announcements included the Bike Rally to be held at the East Atlanta Kids Club on September 16 in Brownwood Park. The Abolish Poverty group continues to meet: next meeting on August 28 at the Ormewood Church at 7:30pm.

The South Moreland Avenue Working Group (SMAWG) shared some progress being made (see article for details).

The Benteen Park Fall Festival is being planned for October 28 from 11:00am to 6:00pm. Joshua Lorenz is looking for support from volunteers and sponsorships. If you want to be involved, contact or Benteen Park itself is a hidden gem.

The highly successful Ormewood Makers Festivals of 2022 and 2023 generated funds for community and educational development within SAND. Please see the article on the approved distribution of a total $15,700 to organizations in SAND.  A reserve of $7,500 is also earmarked for the Neighbors in Need program until April 1, 2024.

The next SAND meeting will be on August 10 (watch for either Zoom or hybrid).
