PGA Could Cause Traffic Tangle

By Nancy Leighton
The regular fall golf tournament of the Professional Golf Association (PGA) will be held at the East Lake Golf Club the last week in September. September 21 and 22 will be practice days for professional golfers to help them become familiar with the course. The four day tournament will run September 23 through 27. Spectators will be allowed on the course starting September 23. The gate will open at 8:00am some days and 9:00am other days. Tee time will be at 11:45am. All traffic will be directed to the Turner Field parking lots.
Shuttle buses will start transporting spectators from the Turner Field parking lots to the East Lake Golf Club 15 minutes before the gates open. This would be at 7:45am some mornings and 8:45am other mornings. Both times mean that PGA traffic will mingle in with the usual rush hour traffic on I-20, I-75, and I-85. There may be heavy traffic on Glenwood Avenue around Burgess-Peterson Academy since the golf club is only a short distance east from there. In addition, there are several I-20 exit and entrance ramps nearby.
The evening traffic depends upon how late the spectators linger at the golf club after the tournament play time. Local residents should have alternative routes planned out just in case it’s necessary.
This tournament is called TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola. Every year it brings thousands of visitors and millions of dollars to our area.
