New Atlanta Habitat Headquarters on Memorial

By Ashley Keyes

Driving towards downtown Atlanta on Memorial Drive, Atlanta Habitat for Humanity is creating a significant change in the Reynoldstown community by transforming a blighted area into its new headquarters.

In 2010, Atlanta Habitat was fortunate to purchase the former ADP Transmission Parts warehouse at 824 Memorial Drive, along with several outlying, abandoned structures on 5.3 acres. The main facility was in poor condition, and the other buildings were unusable. Yet it was a fabulous location – near downtown, easy access on Memorial Drive, and best of all near the Atlanta Beltline.

With the need to turn the 68,500-square-foot warehouse into its headquarters and Family Support Center, in 2012 Atlanta Habitat launched its “It Starts at Home” capital campaign.  The ambitious goal was to raise $12 million, which would cover the costs of the land, renovation of the existing large facility, and construction of a new, freestanding ReStore.

Additionally, the new Atlanta Habitat ReStore, a home improvement outlet, would become a 25,000-square-feet facility, almost double its current size.  This expansion would help Atlanta Habitat grow its revenue stream to build more quality, green homes in partnership with working families.

Today, Atlanta Habitat is closer to its dream, which will provide stability for the mission, additional educational services for families, more efficient office and warehouse space with room for growth, and a stronger community.

Construction is expected to finish in early fall. Visit Atlanta Habitat’s website, www.atlantahabitat.org, to learn more about Atlanta Habitat’s mission, how you can be involved and to shop and donate at the ReStore.
