NEIGHBORHOOD PROFILE: Cutting Hair During the Pandemic

By Henry Bryant

Even before new businesses and recent construction began appearing on Woodward Avenue, you may not have noticed the unassuming storefront for The Wright Style tucked into the business strip closest to the corner of Boulevard.

Joy Wright, owner and sole barber/stylist, says she has been cutting and styling hair from that location “since May 25, 1995.” Other businesses have come and gone, but The Wright Style is a mainstay of the neighborhood. Joy’s clients include people of all ages from all walks of life for whom she provides affordable haircuts and styling along with friendly conversation.

Amidst the uncertainties of the last year, Joy has managed to retain loyal clients and is committed to a strategy of precautions to keep herself and her clients safe from COVID. To that end, Joy schedules one client at a time with masks required and intervals to allow for cleaning and sanitizing. Although this means fewer appointments on her schedule, it’s most important to her to provide a safe environment for everyone.

Her best clients are the ones who come as referrals from others, some of whom have been coming to see her for ten years or more.
