There is great news for anyone who lives, shops, or walks along Moreland Avenue. The South Moreland Avenue Working Group (SMAWG) is excited to report that long-awaited crosswalks are finally being installed. This is a huge win for pedestrian safety in the Porch Press neighborhoods. A total of five new crosswalks will be installed along the stretch of Moreland Avenue between I-20 and I-285, making it easier and safer to get across this busy road.
These five crosswalks are being placed in the following locations: Sanders Avenue: Connecting Wendy’s to Bank of America; Lynwyn Lane: Between Halidom and Dunkin; Moreland Drive: Linking the Moreland Station to the new Eastland Apartments; Isa Drive: From Thomasville Heights to the Starlight Drive-in; Constitution Road: Connecting to Woodstock Road.
Groundwork has already begun. The new ADA-compliant ramps are now installed, making these areas accessible to everyone. Almost all the crosswalks will feature a pedestrian safety island in the center, a vital refuge for anyone crossing. The only exception is the Lynwyn Lane/Halidom location because there is no center median there.
Power is also being installed in preparation for an essential feature: the Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) flashing lights. While the PHB lights themselves are currently on back order (expected to arrive this summer), the crews are working hard. The final zebra striping for the crosswalks will be painted when the flashing lights arrive. These additions mean a significant upgrade in safety for everyone traveling on foot or bike, and needing to cross Moreland Avenue.
SMAWG will continue its efforts to secure a crosswalk connecting Ormewood Park and Brownwood Park, directly addressing the need for safe, easy access to the East Atlanta Kids Club.
Brent Huff is the SMAWG Co-Chair.
