Maynard Jackson High School Recognized As IB Candidate School

By Sharonda Murrell
Maynard Holbrook Jackson High School is now recognized as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Candidate School effective June 13, 2011. The school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to a high-quality, challenging, international education that Maynard Jackson High School believes is important for our students. Once becoming an IB World School, Maynard Jackson will provide the IB Diploma Programme. Maynard Jackson will be the second high school in the Atlanta Public Schools to offer the IB Diploma Programme. Students who pursue the Programme have opportunities to earn college credit if they obtain a certain score on their end-of-the-year exams, which will help them with college tuition costs.
Additionally, Maynard Jackson is recognized as a 2011 Advanced Placement (AP) Challenge School. The teachers have formed an IB Professional Learning Community (PLC) and provide rigorous and relevant learning experiences for all students. A Farm to School program was recently implemented through a grant and partnership with members of the community. They welcome business and community volunteers to collaborate with them throughout the school year. Please contact them at 404-802-5200.
There are many great things occurring daily at Maynard Jackson High School, and they invite you to visit their official Facebook page and “like this.” For further information about the IB and its programs, visit www.ibo.org.
