By the middle of May there will be a new art show on view in the East Atlanta Library Gallery space. The artist is Renee Ruffin an art teacher at Drew Elementary School and former Art Gallery owner in Kirkwood. The Friends of East Atlanta Library, sponsor of the show with the Atlanta Fulton Public Library Service will also have a reception for Ms. Ruffin on May 26.
Renee’s art features bright colors and broad brush strokes in her representational work of flowers, children and women. Even in more muted works there are undertones of rose and purple. She also is known for her jewelry pieces, and there is some that become three dimensional parts of her paintings. The jewelry will not be a separate part of this show, although the Friends may convince her to bring some for the reception. Renee has been a been an important part of the program at Drew since the new building was built at East Lake and art became a critical part of the curriculum. Locals may remember that she and her husband owned a gallery near the Kirkyard Public House for a couple of years when that development first opened.
The reception for the artist will be on Saturday afternoon of the Memorial Day Weekend. All are invited to come and bring family. If you will be in town, you’re encouraged to put it on the calendar now so as not to forget in the holiday weekend rush. In light of the occasion, The Friends will be having a Weeny Roast and serving beer as well as nonalcoholic beverages and other items. There is no charge for the event which will take place from 3:30pm until 5:30pm on May 26. If you want to drop in just for the art and to meet the artist, there is plenty of time afterwards to hit other parties or visit one of the watering holes down the street in the East Atlanta Village.
